This past sunday i awoke to the sight of two pioneer girls giggling at my bedside. They had put together full pioneer costumes and were ready to start a day filled with pioneer crafts and projects and no conveniences of the 21st century. Surprise! but… but… the us open is on tv. Alas when your kids are inspired to power down and do something creative, you can’t pass up the opportunity. I quickly pulled together my own pioneer wear, we churned some butter and ate breakfast, and then we made these cute and easy yarn dolls. They were so simple that the girls could even make them themselves. Here’s how….

As part of a monthly challenge with some friends, i stepped out of my crafting comfort zone and into the power tools / diy zone, and i loved it!  i used by 1 x 2 lumber and other supplies to build an american girl bed for my daughter’s doll, cailyn.

There is short perfunctory text descriptions and black and white line dravings. The text seems aimed att children for them to make clothes for their dolls. I don't think most children today have enough sewing skills to do so on their own. Using this book. If they have some experience of sewing, and want to do it, and have a suitabel adult to help and guide them it might work. The instructions take a lot of scills for granted. For example sewing in zippers is said to be for the advanced sewer. But there is not any description at all on how to do this, only sugestions for garments you might like to make with a zipper for closure.

The shoulder plate is not the only way, but it is the easiest way to attach the head to the body of the doll. The process of making it is the same as for making the head with the mold process outlined above. This photo shows how the “proof” head is fitted to the clay sculpt to be sure the neck and shoulder plate mate smoothly.

Dwe fabric is manufactured and sold as ‘interlock’. This is a knit fabric, but if you see it from the right side or the wrong side, it looks exactly the same. To the untrained eye this might make no big difference, but it does simplify things hugely when you are just starting making dolls.
