Early life[ edit ] hamlisch was born in manhattan , to viennese -born jewish parents max and lilly (née schachter) hamlisch. His father was an accordionist and bandleader. Hamlisch was a child prodigy and, by age five, he began mimicking the piano music he heard on the radio. A few months before he turned seven, in 1951, he was accepted into what is now the juilliard school pre-college division.

Never one to throw in the towel, joplin hired a lawyer and made sure he would receive a one-cent royalty of every copy of sheet music sold, of his next composition – the ‘maple leaf rag’ (1899).

By the mid-'60s, his original songs were performed by judy garland and lesley gore. Hamlisch met movie producer sam spiegel at a party and was hired to write music for his 1968 movie the swimmer starring burt lancaster. His other scoring credits include the april fools, the woody allen movies take the money and run and bananas, kotch, save the tiger starring jack lemmon, the spy who came in from the cold, and starting over. Hamlisch won three academy awards in 1974: for the title song of the movie the way we were, another for the movie's score, and one for his adaptation of the music of ragtime great scott joplin for the paul newman/robert redford movie the sting. An instrumental single from the soundtrack, "the entertainer" went to number three pop in the spring of 1974. Its success brought long-overdue attention to one of the few remaining ragtime masters eubie blake who made frequent guest appearances on the tonight show starring johnny carson, the mike douglas show, saturday night live, and other tv shows. Their was a controversy about the film credits of the sting. Scott joplin's name was in relatively tiny print. Billy dee williams starred in a 1977 bio pic on joplin. Hamlisch won a 1975 tony award for his score for the broadway play a chorus line.

Ragtime was a modification of the popular march style with a syncopated rhythm that gave voice to the black american experience at the turn of the 20th-century. With his sophistication and wide range of influences, joplin seemed to do it better than just about everybody else. Despite this, for a long time, he had been forgotten. The 1972 film, the sting, helped revive his reputation, as marvin hamlisch’s adaptation of one of his most popular rags, 1902’s “the entertainer,†was used in the film and became an international hit. Since then, joplin has become a celebrated figure of the american music canon.

Luke bryan scooped the coveted entertainer of the year award at the 2021 academy of country music (acm) awards on sunday (18. 04. 21). The 44-year-old singer wasn't able to attend the ceremony in nashville or give his performance as planned after revealing last week he had contracted coronavirus but was still thrilled to have been recognised with the prestigious accolade for the third time.

The entertainer is a 1960 british drama film directed by tony richardson , produced by harry saltzman and adapted from the stage play of the same name written by john osborne. The screenplay was adapted from the stage play by osborne and nigel kneale. Although scott joplin did not originate ragtime, the genre for which he became famous, his biographer edward berlin said, "he composed music unlike any ever before written. "joplin's most famous composition, "maple leaf rag," was published while he was living in sedalia, missouri. It was named after the maple leaf club; the date the club was founded is uncertain, but it was no later than november 24, 1898, when the first maple leaf ball was held. It is possible that the actual music predates this.
