"the entertainer" is a 1902 classic piano rag written by scott joplin. One of the classics of ragtime , it returned to international prominence as part of the ragtime revival in the 1970s, when it was used as the theme music for the 1973 oscar -winning film the sting. Composer and pianist marvin hamlisch 's adaptation reached #3 on the billboard pop chart and spent a week at #1 on the easy listening chart in 1974. The sting was set in the 1930s, a full generation after the end of ragtime's mainstream popularity, thus giving the inaccurate impression that ragtime music was popular at that time.

"the entertainer" is sub-titled "a rag time two step", which was a form of dance popular until about 1911, and a style which was common among rags written at the time. Scott joplin was the first classically trained black composer to become a household name in america. Ragtime was eventually succeeded by jazz.

In his native detroit he wrote songs with others for artists who recorded for the city's numerous recording companies, which sprouted like dandelions in the '60s. When billy davis (aka roquel) and tyran carlo relocated to chicago to take over chess records' a&r, replacing harvey fuqua, clarke followed davis to chi-town, where he continued to write songs. An opportunity to record resulted in six singles on chess from 1964-1966, with the third, "the entertainer," the sole success. It's the old happy-in-public/sad-in-private theme, with clever lyrics about an entertainer who fools the public but can't fool himself. Hitting with authority, it ended up at number ten on the r&b charts and number 31 on the pop charts, but clarke evidently lacked the drive to hit the road and wow crowds on a consistent basis; he later dabbled in acting. The light tenor singer died by the hands of his wife, who shot him after absorbing what many say was one of clarke's frequent beatings.
