Schitt's creek was our happy place for quite some time, until the canadian comedy series came to a bittersweet ending earlier this year with a series finale that totally stuck the landing , concluding the story of the rose family on a hopeful and hilarious note. The show finally got the respect it deserved at the 2020 emmys , cleaning up in all four major acting categories in addition to scoring the win for outstanding comedy series, among other prizes. The entire rose family — eugene levy, dan levy , annie murphy, and catherine o'hara — also took home emmys for their performances. Schitt's creek managed to set the emmy record , with their nine wins, for number of awards won by a comedy in a single season. It's nice to see the show get recognized for all the laughs it's brought us over the years, particularly with the heartwarming connections the cast has made.

When i was assigned to interview levy about the show’s fourth season, i was excited to get to watch episodes in advance (#journalistperks). In episode 6, which aired on february 27 on cbc, david’s super-sweet boyfriend, patrick (noah reid) suggests that they host an open mic night at their shop, rose apothecary, to attract more local clients. Whilst watching, i instantly predicted that david would be embarrassed by the idea and that i’d sit back and laugh at the beloved business partners-turned-boyfriends proceeding with marketing their artisanal goods to the townsfolk, business as usj. Instead, patrick takes centre stage at the event. His acoustic performance of tina turner’s “simply the best,†coupled with david’s wordless reaction, had me in a puddle of tears.

What good is a small-town comedy without the weird and wonderful folks who inhabit it? much like parks and recreation, schitt’s creek wouldn’t work without its eclectic cast of characters. Not simply because of how sweet it is, but how unexpected, even four seasons in. Having watched david fumble his way through hookups in schitt’s creek, and having learned (in episodes like 3×10 “sebastien raineâ€) how bleak his love life was before, the audience is ready for patrick’s performance to be as embarrassing as david seems to believe it will be. But instead, as patrick stuns the room, we watch david rendered speechless, then softened, then truly moved. Even more shocking is that moira is, too.

4. Finding David (Season 2 Episode 1)
Schitt's creek is a comedy, —that's something no one can deny — but it's also extremely emotional. Though the show brings out the full belly laughter every single episode, it also includes more than few poignant scenes, that can start the waterworks. (i mean alexis rose and ted mullens at the diner in the finale season, come on!!) but what is unique about the show is that the writers and actors have a knack for combining both of those things into one moment. Leading off the list is a season four episode. That particular season is quite the favorite amongst fans, and makes up most of the top ten episodes. In “the barbecue,†the roses discover david and patrick’s four month anniversary is approaching and want to do something special. Though david prefers to self-sabotage and avoid patrick interacting with his family, patrick accepts their invitation to a barbecue. Little does anyone know that alexis’ guest happens to be patrick’s ex-girlfriend. The episode delivers a comedy of errors that demonstrates how much the family cares about one another, even when they cause each other grief.
During the filming of season 1, hampshire mentioned to dan that sally bowles was her dream character to play, and if they ever did a musical episode, she hoped it would be cabaret. Obviously, that worked out, and it led even led to another bonus fact: the shot of david saying "that's my friend" after stevie sang "maybe this time" is now one of hampshire's favorite moments of the entire series.
Episode 5, “crows premiere†the dress makes a comeback as moira prepares for the crows have eyes 3 premiere that being held in schitt’s creek before streaming on interflix. The episode sets the course for the remainder of the season with moira experiencing a return to the red carpet, johnny joins forces with roland and stevie for their commitment to expanding the motel business, and david and patrick find out that there are a few conversational stones unturned in their relationship.
The off-camera chemistry between the stars of the show has to be one for the books because their chemistry on camera is amazing. I don't think i'm alone when i say i would love to be a fly on the wall during one of their table readings. From the mother and son relationship between moira and david to the wife and husband relationship between moira and johnny, and we can't forget about david's hilariously realistic connection with alexis, it's safe to say the rose household is one that is hilarious even when they're not trying. In one episode from season two, moira attempted to put on her nurturing hat and pass down a recipe from her mother to david. But things take a turn when david or moira don't know what "fold in the cheese" means. Clearly these two didn't cook a decent meal in their lives as the rich and famous. And it's fun to see them try to adjust together.
