“schitt’s creekâ€
pop tv
[editor’s note: this review contains spoilers for the “schitt’s creek†series finale, “happy ending. â€]
since 2015, “schitt’s creek†has been one of the most charming shows on television.
While that may not sound like strong praise in terms of genuine quality humor — instead, perhaps, it sounds like acknowledgment that the show is just as canadian as its creators and cast — it absolutely is, because the series’ ability to be effortlessly charming also revealed that a show can be warm and good-hearted without being sappy or lacking edge in its humor.
The roses are on fire. The 72nd primetime emmy awards are underway, and so far, one show has swept the whole damn thing. Schitt's creek has won every award in the comedy categories for acting, writing, directing, and the mother of it all, outstanding comedy series. All four members of the rose family— david (played by dan levy), alexis (annie murphy), johnny (eugene levy), and moira (catherine o'hara) won for their respective performances, marking each actor's first emmy win.
The syndication deal was first announced last fall, but the timing of the syndicated launch could not be more fitting, given “schitt’s creek’s†performance at the primetime emmy awards, winning all of the top comedy awards and making history as the first series -- comedy or drama -- to win all categories in its field, including outstanding comedy. The show also broke the record for the most wins for a comedy show in one given year.
Schitt's creek did not start out with a bang. Despite stunning performances from the likes of eugene levy and catherine o'hara, the canadian fish-out-of-water comedy remained criminally under-known for years. Finally, though, with its sixth and final season, the feel-good show found its place in the pop culture lexicon. Schitt's creek set a new record at the 2020 emmys, winning nine trophies—the most ever for a comedy in a single year. That included awards for all four of the show's lead actors (catherine o'hara, eugene levy, annie murphy, and dan levy), on top of statuettes for best writing, best directing, and overall best series. And now, the show will have a chance to pull off a similar coup at the golden globes, as it heads into the 2021 awards ceremony with five nominations.
While saying goodbye to schitt’s creek was devastating, the fact that it won more awards than we could keep track of at the 2020 emmys was a slight respite from the anguish over the end of the series. The comedy goldmine, which follows a rich family who loses it all and starts life over in a small-town motel, has become a cult favorite since its premiere in 2015. The series has only gotten better with time, earning its first emmy nominations in 2019.
In the 2015 premiere of “schitt’s creek,†a riches-to-rags comedy, the rose family arrive in the tiny titular town wearing the designer clothes of their past life as protective gear. But over the show’s six seasons on pop tv, viewers have seen the once wealthy roses — johnny ( eugene levy ) and moira (catherine o’hara) and their adult children, david (daniel levy) and alexis ( annie murphy ) — scrape their way from being penniless exiles in a town they’d bought as a joke to being elemental members of the community. They’ve found gratifying work, made real friends and fallen in love.
Schitt’s creek revolves around the roses, a formerly ultra-wealthy family who, as the show begins, are in the process of losing everything because of their business manager’s tax dodging. Patriarch johnny (eugene levy) used to operate a video rental chain, while moira ( catherine o’hara and a voluminous wardrobe full of wigs) is a retired soap actress; the children david (dan levy) and alexis ( annie murphy ) are both dilettantes in their 20s. Now, the government (never named, so we never quite know if they’re in canada or the us) has left them with a single remaining asset: the town of schitt’s creek, which johnny had bought for david as a gag gift.
So um, when i go missing, just feel free to tell people that the last place i was seen was at a sketchy bar on the outskirts of town meeting randoms. — david rose describing the wobbly elm.
“i could not be more at one with nature. I do coachella every year. â€â€“ david rose, schitt’s creek, season 1, “turkey shoot†2 / 50.
Season 3, episode 1: when moira catches david's one-night stand, jake, stepping out of the shower, she tells her clearly uncomfortable son, "david, stop acting like a disgruntled pelican!".
The basic plot for those who have yet to experience the magic that is schitt’s creek: wealthy family loses their fortune when their business manager messes up. The jewish family — eugene levy’s johnny, catherine o’hara’s moira, dan levy’s david, and annie murphy’s alexis — are forced to move to the one place they still own: a small town in rural canada called schitt’s creek that johnny had bought david as a joke.
The show is a family comedy – created and produced by eugene levy and his son, dan, who play johnny and david rose. The family dynamics keep the conceit of the show – the fish out of water, elite in the boondocks trope – fresh because they (along with catherine o’hara and annie murphy who plays alexis rose) are so refreshing. The best parts – the most relatable parts – are the sibling closeness and rivalry david and alexis and the parental revelations of the elder roses as the show goes on. This show also introduced me to dan levy (who’s better known in canada), and i love him so much at this point that i’m thinking of putting a poster of him up on my wall and i’m 38 damn years old.
As “schitt’s creek†grew more popular, fans and critics alike noted the show was devoid of the homophobia-related story lines that typically revolve around lgbtq characters like david. “i have no patience for homophobia,†daniel explained at a 2018 vulture event. “as a result, it’s been amazing to take that into the show. We show love and tolerance. If you put something like that out of the equation, you’re saying that doesn’t exist and shouldn’t exist. â€.
We don’t have to worry about the rose family being cancelled this time around. Schitt’s creek has already been renewed for a sixth and final season on cbc in canada and pop in the united states. The series has grown in popularity as the years have passed, thanks to streaming services offering the show. Will the final season on pop reflect that growth in the ratings? stay tuned.
Schitt’s creek is a peak tv rarity: instead of steadily shrinking over time, the canadian-produced comedy from co-creators/stars eugene and dan levy has actually gotten bigger with age. Since launching on cable’s pop network in 2015, the show has seen its linear ratings more than double and its overall audience soar past 3 million viewers. Word of mouth around the series has also exploded, fueled by critical acclaim and a 2017 deal which put past seasons of the show on netflix. But schitt’s didn’t just happen overnight. It’s been a slow-rolling success, blowing up at a point in its run when most other shows would just be starting to wind down. Ahead of the series’ season-five premiere, vulture called up the levys, as well as execs at two of their network partners, for the inside story on just how the rose family blossomed into an american beauty.

Note: this review discusses events depicted in the final season, and final episode, of schitt's creek. From the opening moments of the first scene of last night's schitt's creek finale episode, it was clear: nothing would change, and everything would. "the day did have a slight singultus," said moira, upon waking david on the morning of his wedding day. And there it was, clear as a mission statement. Moira was still moira: that same affected diction, the same penchant for circumlocution, the same tendency to minimize others' distress. Because by "singultus" she meant "hiccup," and by "hiccup" she meant "downpour. ".

It contains minor spoilers. The rose family and their neighbors in schitt’s creek are back for a sixth and final season and, as with any tv series that is able to go out on its own terms, schitt’s creek has some questions to definitively answer. Though this comedic gem is far from the kind of plot-driven shows like game of thrones that demand plot-driven answers, the questions schitt’s creek asks are no less important to its fans, and in no less demand of answers.
If everything goes according to plan sunday night, the beloved canadian series schitt’s creek will take a victory lap, months after its series finale, by winning the evening’s top comedy prize—and, we have to presume, a heap more awards for its creator and star dan levy and his talented castmates. But schitt’s creek’s road to the virtual emmy red carpet was far from a conventional one. Here’s how the rose family unexpectedly became america’s imported sweethearts.
“schitt’s creek†fans have been looking for something to fill the moira rose wig wall -sized hole in our hearts since the series ended in april. At the emmys on sunday night, we were treated to a brief, super-sweet and stylish reprise. Creator and star daniel levy helped sweep the emmys in a thom browne kilt reminiscent of the one he wore to marry patrick, played by noah reid, in the show’s series finale.
Eugene levy and catherine o’hara in “schitt’s creek†dan levy began thinking about how to end “schitt’s creek†way back when season 4 was wrapping up, but the series co-creator recently noted that he would be open to revisit its beloved characters in the future. Levy discussed his work on “schitt’s creek†in a new variety feature that celebrated the series ahead of its april 7 series finale. Though he joked that he a wished the sitcom, which follows a formerly wealthy family who are forced to relocate to a small town they previously purchased as a joke, could go on for “100 seasons,†levy noted that quality over quantity was more important. Still, if there was an appropriate idea for a future project in the “schutt’s creek†universe, levy said he’d be eager to return to the franchise.
