The run starts in olympic valley, california, near the site of the 1960 winter olympics, and ends 100. 2 miles later in auburn, california. In the decades since its inception in 1974, western states has come to represent one of the ultimate endurance tests in the world.

For much of my childhood, she was a cocktail waitress in a real honest to god honky tonk, she listened to merle haggard and hank williams like it was her job, and she looked the part, too. In fact, she tried to force that bullshit on me in my youth; for my 7th birthday, she bought me a pair of cowboy boots and a damned children’s duster , and if you think going to school in hand-me-downs a decade old is embarrassing, try walking into your elementary school looking like gene wilder in blazing saddles. Every goddamn day was halloween, and it was humiliating.

The underlying morality is about aging and redemption and lance henriksen delivers this perfectly. Tom berenger is also perfect in his role as the eccentric sheriff. This is not the shoot-em-up adventure that typified earlier westerns. It’s a slower, thoughtful love story. It is only number ten in our list because of what follows. It is, nonetheless, quite a fine film.

This 2016 movie comes from director ti west, who previously made acclaimed and atmospheric horror films like house of the devil,  the innkeepers, and the sacrament. He took that experience into making a western movie that looks and feels a bit creepy. Ethan hawke plays a drifter who wanders into a nearly abandoned wild west town. The town’s marshall, played by john travolta, and his deputy son, tell him to leave town and don’t come back. Hawke’s character does just that. However, outside of town, the marshall’s son and some others attack him and leave him for dead. That’s when things get really violent.

By the mid-'60s, audiences had begun to tire of the genre that dominated television’s first decade as a mass medium. But movie studios had found a lucrative new business producing episodic westerns on existing films sets and backlots, and wanted to keep milking the cash cow. So producers began scrambling to put new spins on familiar stories and settings.

The app is great fun. You can get it either free with commercials which are short and at decent intervals or pay 99 cents a month, which i do, and skip the commercials. I recommend the 99 cents option. It makes for a better viewing experience although i do watch free movies on pluto, popcorn flix, crackle, tubi and imdb and its not a big deal with the commercials except when the volume is louder than the movie and you have to turn it down and up every break. Anyway, there is a great selection of westerns in various categories and you will never run out of fun viewing. Every once in awhile when i open it, there will be a commercial but i just reload it and the commercial is gone. I imagine this quirk will be fixed in a later update. It is a terrific app!.
